I have been the happy owner of an Islands 17 for nine years. Built in '77, it has the original sails in great condition, but with new lines. i rebuilt the rudder, which now tilts and stays up when on a mooring. I added a 42" long mahogany tiller with an extension. The trailer is somewhat rusted, but tilts for launch in shallow water. I also replaced the spreaders and some of the rigging.

i have specs for the Tanzer 18, which is very similar, from which I designed and manufactured the new rudder.

I have decided to sell the boat. It is in Westport, NY on Lake Champlain. I would like to get $1000 for the boat, OBO. You can email me or call 817-812-2957.

Have owned this boat since 1974,,,, not sailing it this year as I have upgraded to a DS20. It is a great little boat and a lot of fun to sail.

You should have a cleat for the main... on my boat it is attached to the traveller, on yours it should be attached to the centreboard housing.

Mine is set up with two sets of cleats and line guides on the gunales for the jib, one set for solo, a second set when with crew.

Mine is trapezed rigged as well.

I don't have her rigged this year, but I can send you pictures if you like of what is what if that helps.

Happy sailing!

Hi sailors,

My boat is already advertised on the known best sites in QC.

I'm looking for an equivalent for reaching potential buyers in the Great Lakes and maritimes regions.

Googling, I came up with the list of sites below. Used anyone of those as a buyer or seller ? Which one did you use or would use if you're looking for a sailboat ?

Or should I break down, hire a broker to be listed on Yachtworld ?

TIA

Hello to all. Glad to find a contact for other Islands 17 owners. I have had a 1976 yellow model since 1979, and sailed it with my family on the Great South Bay of Long Island NY. My understanding from a local marine supplier is that Ocean Yachts produced these in a facility on the Patchogue River in Patchogue LI, NY I have been successful in replacing any worn hardware with Hobbie products. According to the former marine supplier in Bellport NY, the original standing rigging used, was standard Hobbie products.

I now have a Rhodes 22, and still sail the Great South Bay, so I am planning to place my Islands 17 on eBay. I would be glad to hear from any of you.

Ok, I'm not so sure about the shaft seal replacement. Having once again had the water in the lower cylinder problem (although last year the replacement of the adapter plate gasket solved the problem) I have decided to replace the shaft seals. After removing the triangular flange I see there are two seals inside. Based on Desksailings advise I ordered only one seal but now think thats a mistake. The two seals needed according to the service manual are 321504 and the seal 319664. The seal desk sailing refers to 319664 he correctly says has been replaced by part number 398051. The new seal has an improved design (according to product literature) with a teflon insert in the lower lip to prevent leakage. It also says that the lip be installed with seal installer 333520. The use of seal installer 321515 will position the seal too deep in the seal retainer and the seal lips will not contact the seal area. How critical are the use of the seal installer tools really?

By the way, there is another thread on the Islands 17 at http://forums.voileabordable.com/read.php?2,1975,page=1

I posted this information at that thread, and figure it can't hurt to have it here also:

I did a bunch of Googling, and for those of you (like me) who need to make a new rudder, here is what you need:

http://www.clal.ca/tanzer16/ttopics/tsheet1a.jpg

http://www.clal.ca/tanzer16/ttopics/tsheet2a.jpg

What you will find there is a PDF file of a large technical drawing of a Tanzer 16. The Islands 17 apparently was a very close copy of the Tanzer 16, and from what I have found, the rudder designs are identical.

I also found an Islands 17 owner on the web, and he was kind enough to send me photos of his original rudder, with a tape measure next to it, from which I was able to see that it is indeed just like the rudder on the Tanzer 16. The Islands 17 rudder might be just a couple inches longer to the bottom point, but that's about it.

The rudder is 3/16" aluminum sandwiched between marine plywood.

The Tanzer 16 site, which also has a little info about the Islands 17, is http://www.clal.ca/tanzer16/ttopics/. You'll find that much of what he says about the Tanzer 16 applies equally to the Islands 17.

This also will be helpful to you:

http://www.rvharvey.com/images-boats/sumnerislands17.pdf

That is a PDF of the original Islands 17 "owner's manual," such as it is. It does describe how to set up the rigging, and gives some specs on the boat, but it's short on lots of detail.

I'm planning on putting together a website with all the information I can find about the Islands 17, because I have yet to find one. So I figure I might as well put one together. When I finally get it together, I'll post a link.

I have seen Islands 17's come up on various Craig's lists from time to time. That's how I acquired mine just a few weeks ago.

Do some Googling and look at boat listings on Craig's lists. For searching across many Craig's lists at once, check out SearchTempest.

Hi Justen,

I had an Island 12 for many years then it was stolen. It broke my heart. Never did recover it ... the boat that is. I stumbled onto your message while searching for your family boatworks. It was my hope that I could get another Island ... 15 or 19. But you say all the molds are destroyed. Any chance you know where I could locate one of these boats?

If you are up for it, please revive Sumner boat works. You all made such wonderful boats.

Hope to hear from you. Fair winds and clear skies. )))

Hey folks -

I have just acquired a bright yellow 1979 Islands 17.

> Sonic 23 is a canadian sailboat. It is no longer
> in
> production. Used to be built by Bermarine in
> Montreal. Like several boat manufacturers in
> Canada this company went belly up
> in the mid 80's as the market for sailboats
> plummeted. I own personally such a boat, don't
> exactly what you want to know but
> am in a position to give you a lot of info over
> e-mail. Could also mail you the selling brochure,
> should you supply me with your
> adress.

Actualy this is my second Mirage.
I've bought a Mirage 26 from Mr. Gariepy from champlain Lake who told me
he was the owner of one of the transport company that were delivering the new Mirage when they were in production.

It must feel good to see so much interest over Mirage boat 20 years after.

Thank you kindly!
