Hi sail drive owners!

I hev this simple issue... BUT FOR ME ITS NOT THAT SIMPLE...

OK I get water leaking into the engine compartment when the engine is running. I can see that the waterdrops are coming from the main seal between the mounting plate and the motor.

So, I removed the engine, removed the nuts and bolt needed to separate the intermediate housing from them´main block.
This is where I'm stuck. I can get the parts to devide at the gasket.
Its stuck like its one part... how can I force them apart without damaging the important stuff?

Rgrds

Erik

On your OMC there is 4 bolts under the adapter plate that come up into the power head and two nuts that are a little bit back (about half way from the front of the engine to the back) that come down. Once these six are removed you should be able to wiggle the power head loose and pick it right up with your hands (I'm assuming of course that you've already removed the water lines, exhaust hose and needed electrical). If its still stuck, double check that everything is disconnected and that there was nothing missed. If your not the original owner then it is possible that the person before you may have used some sort of gasket sealer which would make it a bit more of a challenge to pick it up.

The OMC part numbers are:
398051 - this is the number for the seal. Its now a double seal in one housing, upgraded from the two separate seals your going to remove. Read the instructions on how to install it and what you will need. It goes in on the lower part of the seal housing closer to the water pump, away from the engine

319710 - This is the gasket that goes between the adapter plate and power head. You will need to replace it.

I also recommend that you change the two o-rings that go on the housing that is holding your damaged seals. Those part numbers are:
322224 and 319662, you will need one of each. They are over 20 years old and help to keep the water out.

Remember to clean all mating surfaces of any old gasket material before putting it back together.

Hope you get to enjoy your boat soon.

Hi! With my OMC Zephyr Saildrive motor, I had a water problem entering the cylinders because of the powerhead gasket having breached allowing water into the crankcase. That may have been because of poor winterizing. I have now replaced that gasket plus many seals including the lower crankcase seal (in the triangular flange). I also replaced the water pump seals. However, buying a new water pump impeller housing was not possible as these are obsolete. On startup on its trailer on the driveway (with a big container of water enclosing the saildrive leg), no water is being pumped up the leg at all. The engine runs well and the new impeller is turning but it is not drawing up water. Before this incident, in the past it did seem to suck up water while on the driveway. Should I not be able to test the water pump like I would with an outboard motor in a bucket of water or must the sailboat be in water so the waterline is above the height of the water pump? It doesn’t appear that the water screen is plugged. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Ok, I'm not so sure about the shaft seal replacement. Having once again had the water in the lower cylinder problem (although last year the replacement of the adapter plate gasket solved the problem) I have decided to replace the shaft seals. After removing the triangular flange I see there are two seals inside. Based on Desksailings advise I ordered only one seal but now think thats a mistake. The two seals needed according to the service manual are 321504 and the seal 319664. The seal desk sailing refers to 319664 he correctly says has been replaced by part number 398051. The new seal has an improved design (according to product literature) with a teflon insert in the lower lip to prevent leakage. It also says that the lip be installed with seal installer 333520. The use of seal installer 321515 will position the seal too deep in the seal retainer and the seal lips will not contact the seal area. How critical are the use of the seal installer tools really?

ok problem solved. The shaft sels necessary for the triangular flange are OMC part #398051 and you need 2 of them! anyone still read this thread?

I also have water in the engine compartment but mostly when the engine is cooling down after being run. I hate to waste valuable sailing time so I have been putting up with it. Any suggestions.
